    1. We can sum up the idea of emotional intelligence by being able to control your emotions rather than letting your emotions control you. It is not about the idea of not showing emotions but instead being able to handle your emotions and not excessively show them.

    2. Growing up, I've learned that smartness has nothing to do with emotions; on the contrary, it was most wise to stick to logic, numbers and formalities. The first time I heard the term "Emotional Intelligence," I thought of it as contradictory and misleading. Emotional intelligence is something you'll find in personality tests and job descriptions. Researchers dissect it and try to measure it, but at the end of the day, it's just "street smarts." There's much emphasis on empathy, social competence and leadership qualities in the workplace, but emotional intelligence starts at a much more basic level. A kid's social skills can save them from bullying and isolation. A teenager's empathy helps them connect better with people and therefore be more understood. A young adult's self-awareness guides them through hardships. Thus, emotional intelligence does not just walk hand by hand with intellect, but is necessary for survival. To end on a happy note, it's something we can all learn :D

    5. Thanks! I think that EI corresponds to more effective learning habits so it could be related to intelligence. One's self awareness can help them find the best ways to learn and the fields they're best at. This automatically makes them more successful in life.

    6. I personally think being emotionally intelligent means being able to control my own feelings and at the same time having the ability to influence people's emotions. What gives someone advantage over someone else that has the same competences, skills and grades is his emotional intelligence. That's makes you a good boss at work, a great leader in your football team, an outstanding performer in every field.

  2. Hey guys! It's Elias again. As said before, we will open an interesting discussion here that revolves around "Emotional Intelligence".

  3. Having read the text, and knowing that emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise one's own feelings and those of others, distinguish between the feelings, and use the appropriate feeling in the suitable situation, do you think that emotional intelligence is crucial in every situation? Furthermore, do you believe that this intelligence has drawbacks?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think it is important to not let feelings get in the way of professional interactions. So yes emotional intelligence is very important. It does have its drawbacks because sometimes emotions help one understand others.

    2. I do believe that emotional intelligence is crucial in every situation. Emotional intelligence can have a big impact on a person's work life and career, so it’s important to understand exactly what it is and why it is so important. Every workplace is comprised of people with different strengths, personalities and emotions, which can greatly affect the way they work. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your emotions as well as the emotions of others.

      Delete
    3. I think that emotional intelligence is present in every situation whether we intend on that or not. I find that this helps us be more aware of what others are feeling as well as what we are feeling. However, sometimes it might take a bad turn if we let ourselves get too emotionally involved like getting frustrated if someone corrects us or sad if we don't get picked.

      Delete
    4. I do believe that emotional intelligence plays a huge part in our everyday social interaction and do believe that it can set you back in your life and in your relationships such as: school, job, university, social relationships

      Delete
    5. Emotional intelligence is important because it highly affects how to react with people when facing certain situations and when we need evaluate them especially in the field of jobs and leadership. The best leader or employer is the one that have both high IQ and EQ.

  5. Furthermore, do you think that emotional intelligence should be taken into consideration in employment nowadays? Or is it just about the IQ, skills, and experience in the field?

    1. Those are some interesting questions you guys raised. However, I just wanted to say that I feel like instead of dividing your questions you could've left them as two big questions that hold more weight.

      Delete
    2. Regardless of the situation or area of employment, emotional intelligence should be taken into consideration in employment because I believe that success in the workplace is dependent on the person's ability to recognize their feelings and those of others and be able to use that to their advantage.

      Delete
    3. i personally believe that emotional intelligence is an important factor to be taken into consideration in employment along with IQ and experience. social relationships in the workplace are very effective in the functionality of the employee in which emotional intelligence has a big role especially through emotional management and social emotional awareness.

      Delete
    4. IQ, skills and experience are very important but they don't matter if we don't take in consideration emotional intelligence, because we cannot deal with work if we cannot deal with our emotions, we will be overwhelmed.

      Delete
    5. emotional intelligence is important in everyday life however employment should not depend on emotional intelligence as a main factor. if emotionally intelligent a person knows how to deal with others but this skill can be gained through experience which also gives the person specific skills . these skills' benefits over come those of emotional intelligence.

      Delete
    6. When employing someone, emotional intelligence should be taken into consideration because it can affect the productivity of the employee. In addition he should be strong emotionally to handle tough times in business and know how to handle himself.

      Delete
    7. As you have said, some scientist say that the emotional intelligence is twice as important as the IQ, so there is an important reason to take the emotional intelligence into consideration in employment nowadays.

      Delete
    8. in some domains of life it is preferable to be objective rather than subjective . Such domains include the job market . If we focus on the emotions of individuals we would mislead vital personal abilities that can be highly beneficial . Just because an individual is more emotionally stable doesnt mean he is more successful .

      Delete
    9. I agree that Emotional Intelligence should be considered in employment nowadays since it aids in creating a healthy, friendly, and productive environment. When employers are emotionally aware and are good at recognizing and managing they're emotions, they will be able to reduce conflict among members of the work space. By doing so, employers would squander less time on small disputes that may rise from a lack of empathy and may be able to be more productive. As the saying "Two heads are better than one" states, with a lack of arguments, the work space can be one where skills and feelings are developed rather than scrutinized and judged. A project, for example, may be done faster and in a more time efficient manner when everyone's opinions and judgement are respected and taken into consideration.

      Delete
    10. What you said is absolutely true. Emotions do play a huge role in human behavior and we cant just disregard emotional intelligence with respect to skills, experience etc.

      Delete
    11. Yes, emotional intelligence should most definitely be taken into consideration in employment. Since emotional intelligence defines a person on a whole new level and a novel aspect, employers would be surprised to find what emotionally intelligent people are able to accomplish inherently. Individuals with low emotional intelligence are in no way able to function properly within the work-space, even if they are highly intellectual with prominent skills and experience. Emotional intelligence goes beyond academic education and experience; it creates depth and allows people to discover emotions as a major and significant part of success. As a result, emotional intelligence should be the top priority when looking at employees.

      Delete
    12. I believe that to be able to succeed in the employment/professional life, one should be more than just book-smart. In fact, EQ plays an important role in succeeding and being able to move forward in life, for it distinguishes between different feelings and emotions and therefore helps every individual to act and make decisions according to each situation, and not just act and react blindly.

      Delete
    13. IQ is the mental age divided by the chronological age multiplied by 100. This indicator helps distinguish average people from gifted people. On the other hand, EQ helps distinguish the best among a variety of equally qualified people. Therefore, it should be taken into consideration in employment and valued as much as IQ is.

      Delete
  6. Other than EQ and EI, the personality of the person is also to be considered

    ReplyDelete

    1. I believe EQand EI are aspects of a person's personality.

  7. It's also important to know what are the reasons that emotional intelligence is not a standard in Lebanese employment.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I find that in Lebanon it has to do with shame and tradition where people believe that you should always take everything in and not show your true emotions to others.

  8. As argued by Cherniss, non-cognitive aspects of ones emotional intelligence contributes to our performances both in individual context and collective contributions. Therefore, while examining ones intelligence, it is essential to consider several aspects of the human intellect. IQ scores and academic skills can not alone define a persons intelligence in a field. Intelligence is defined by both intellectual and emotional capacity and ability to perform.

    ReplyDelete
  9. As a response to your presentation:
As you mentioned, emotional intelligence is less accounted for here in Lebanon than in other companies around the world. Why do you think this is? What is the cause of this tendency?

    1. Hello everyone, as you may or may not know, my colleagues and I will be presenting "Carnal Acts":
Nancy Mairs gave us an insight about how she dealt with multiple sclerosis, which is a type of disability, throughout her life at both the societal and personal level by writing a collection of essays entitled "Carnal Acts". Upon reading it, did Nancy's writings influence how you view disabled people? How? And do you think that disabilities are a source of obstacles for its holder? why?
In the text, Nancy claimed that a person has no voice if that person has no body, do you agree or disagree with this? and why?

      Delete
    2. We are in no position to decide whether physically disabled people can overcome their obstacles or not; whether they can come to terms with their reduced bodies that in turn reduced them to mere bodies. How can they then live in a controversial society? Bodies are mortal and mundane; things we think we are not. Bodies, however, have to fall under strict standards and a narrow definition of beauty. Well, what's beautiful about Nancy Mairs is how she profoundly shook me. She told us it's time to own our bodies the way they are. When I finished reading the text, I thought that this is what I needed to read about disability; this is what needed to be said. So, when she says that she found her voice, not despite of, but because of MS, we can say that she overcame her disability. We cannot by any means generalize it. There are no rules when it comes to picking ourselves up when we drown. What worked for Mairs might not work for another person. And let's not forget that her journey hit the rock bottom when she had a failed suicide attempt. What she felt when she rose from death might've been even worse than what she felt when she made the decision. Her husband was a huge support that loved her back to life, loved her with her heavy body. However, this also might not work for everyone. In Jojo Moyes' novel, Me Before You, Will could not stay no matter how Louica showered him in love.

    1. The obsession of healthy eating, thus intended beneficial for your body, relates to other eating disorders in the sense that they restrict your freedom in certain domains. For instance, people suffering from Orthorexia may experience struggles in social settings, particularly related dining and collective eating . Regarding self-respect and self-worth Orthorexia is a restraining factor that prohibits free exploitation of thoughts. Orthorexia should be viewed as a mental state of mind whereas the subject is constantly affected by desire to eat healthy. The cases of severeness may very as for any other mental disorder. Society sets it rules regarding what body type is ideal and deemed right, so people try to shape their bodies according to those ideal specifications, often in extremely unhealthy methods, leading to orthorexia. It's the way we have been socialized and socially reproduce our views concerning body image that many diseases related to the body are emerging and rising.

As you may already know, my group and i will be presenting tomorrow. Here are a few things that we thought would be great for discussion:
    1) how may the author's multiple sclerosis affect her writing?
    2) would you agree or disagree with the author when she states that body is an entity possessed by "i" and why? ( please refer to the quote "i have body...you don't say, i am a body" p. 350 )
    3) can a disease such as multiple sclerosis affect one's emotional intelligence? how?

  16. Hey everyone,
Tomorrow, Lina, Hiba and I are going to present Jamal Jurban's text The Resistance Armed With Words (Yemen). We will be discussing these 3 main points:
    1) How can racism contribute to a greater language barrier?
    2) How can language barriers create difficulties connected to education?
    3) How can language contribute in the process of empowering/realizing our own identities?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1) Racism has a lot to do with the terminology racists use. They usually choose condescending words to make people feel that their entire identity is something to be ashamed of. One example is the N-word. People also use it to joke around thinking it's okay. This word signifies a very bad period for American black people and when a white person uses it to call their friends, whether black or white, it definitely isn't okay! Thus, racism uses a certain language to create barriers between people .

  17. Do you think that the world would be better if we all spoke the same language?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A big no! Each language is a lens we see the world through. It's very important to have and maintain this richness of the human condition. If we all spoke the same language, we would have the same mindset, culture and aspirations as if we were all computers speaking Java.

      Delete
    2. Of course not, since a common language would mean a common culture. What makes today's community so special is its diverse cultures and traditions,so why to ruin the diversity of ideas and beliefs around us..

      Delete
    3. It would be really good if every population spoke the same language as well as their own. When a language is spoken everywhere on Earth, lots of ideas are shared, so you can "travel" easily through reading. When ancient languages are conserved at the same time, you have another advantage: you can "time travel".
You can also think of it like group work, where optimal results require both individual and collective reasoning...

      Delete
    4. No! What makes us unique and different it is our culture and identity. Speakinh the same language make us all the same.
I think speaking different languages is an important factor and obstacle of interaction. It makes us curious to talk to people from different backgrounds who have new ideas but at the same time it is a little difficult to understand each other.

      Delete
    5. That is a simple "no", for simply, diversity is the origin of the universe's beauty.

      Delete
    6. Monotony is boring and especially if it was in something we use everyday and every minute

      Delete
    7. The cultural richness and diversity of today's world is what makes it so beautifully unique. Many languages teach us many things, they bring us together as human beings when everything else tends to keep us apart. So, I think just 1 language would make the world boring and repetitive.

      Delete
  18. In your opinion, why should we or should we not save a language?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We should, in order to preserve the writings of our ancestors and to study History. By the way, History started with the creation of language, so you cannot study it if you don't preserve languages.

      Delete
    2. With every language comes a great deal of wisdom, today we can see that the least spoken languages are the one still spoken by the older generations in a society. That is because they are trying to hold on to their heritage to what has been passed on from one generation to another. Hence, we should always try our best to save a language.

      Delete
    3. Language connects the society as a whole specifying different cultures and traditions and giving the society a unique identity. Language is the vehicle through which we understand the world and with the loss of a language not just words are lost, but an entire way of thinking.

  19. Good evening! Chris, Jenna and I will be presenting "Why is Marriage such a Failing Institution?" tomorrow. Here are some questions:

Do you think statistics are enough evidence for drawing conclusions in social sciences?
Was the writer’s use of first person hurtful or helpful in persuading her audience?
Did the writer convince you that marriage is a failing institution?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No,statistics are never enough since some errors might arise. For instance, statistical fluctuations might differ in meaning than actual emotions, thinkings ,beliefs, and values that people truly believe in.
The usage of the first person helped in persuasion since it permitted the audience's involvement in the discussed topic.
In my opinion, the writer could somehow convince his audience that marriage is a failing institution.

      Delete
    2. Personally, I don’t think that statistics are enough evidence since it gives us an allure of the reality and not the reality itself. The usage of the first person has permitted the audience to be interpelled and nore co cerned about the topic. With all these, the writer, in a way or another, might’ve convinced the audience to plead to his point of view

      Delete
    3. I kind of agree with providing statistic because, these numbers provided are actual real numbers observed and not made up HA HA. an if you have noticed, you said social sciences, and social sciences rely on research where numbers(statistics) are infused.
Actually, it brought me close to her on a personal level because using this point of view is a very important portal to her emotions and feelings.
Not really, to be honest, I don't think marriage could be a failing institution, because what marriage was based on isn't being applied nowadays(not generally of course). The approach she used convinced me in same angles.

  21. “Back in the Gay” by William Saletan
-Are you with or against gay couples raising children?
-What do you think straight couples have to offer to their kids that gay couples do not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think a gay couple wont be able to raise a child the same way as a straight couple . First of all we all know that from breast feeding we have built a role of caregiving for the mother towards her child , and in case of a gay couple this aspect would be absent . Second , it is vital for the child to feel that strong bond with his biological parents where in case of a gay couple ofcourse the child would be adopted . Third of all and what is most important in my perspective is that we live in a heteronormative society which means the child would be bullied in the society because he is being raised among same sex couples . Moreover in most of the countries the child wont be considered legal and hence he would lack a lot of rights . considering the second question , i think straight couple can provide a stable secure atmosphere for the child to live in , an atmosphere where he has all his rights and freedoms . Your topic is interesting there is a lot more to write .

      Delete
    2. I talk a lot about society and socialization, but society is where we live and we can not deny its effects on us. I believe that gender roles is something that doesn't truly exist, yet we have been socialized to believe that each sex (male or female) should be associated with a certain gender (what is it that society believes that each sex should behave and think). Thus, what prevents a male to do the expressive role of the female? And what prevents the female to perform the instrumental role of the male? Us believing that they can't doesn't mean that they really can't.

      Delete
    3. Most of gay couples' children are adopted since obviously, 2 parents of the same sex can't reproduce. Wouldn't it be better for the child to have 2 mothers or 2 fathers than no parent at all? I believe that homosexual couples are as capable of raising children as straight couples. Even though the child would be living with 2 mothers or 2 fathers, a mom can play the role of a father figure and similarly, a dad can play the role of a mother figure except for the breastfeeding part. However, if you think of it, when a straight couple adopts a child, the mother would still not be able to breastfeed the baby. So breastfeeding isn't only an issue among gay couples, but is an issue whenever a couple adopts a child.
It is undeniable that a family composed of homosexual parents doesn't fit into social norms, however the child would receive the same amount of love, support and respect from his gay parents like any other child with straight parents. Thus, I believe that there is nothing that straight couples have to offer, that gay couples don't.

      Delete
    4. I think that the relation between children and their straight parents is very important and this relation can't be maintained by a gay couple. Most of the things you know, you learn from your parents and you distinguish the life of a male and a female from your dad and mother. You might learn such things from your relatives, but there will be something missing due to your biological relation with your parents. Also, a child raised by a homosexual couple will not be accepted in our society, he/she will face many problems at school, at work and everywhere.

  22. Hello everyone , so karim , helena , wassim , and i will be presenting "The Moral Instinct " by Steven Pinker tomorrow . I hope you answer to these questions :
How do you think we establish what's wrong and what's right ?
Do you think morals are found in our instinct or are they analyzed through experience ?
Do you believe based on your general knowledge or moral instinct that it should be presented as a sixth sense ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. From a very young age our parents try to teach us the difference between wrong and right. However, I believe that a persons morals develop with life experience and with the way that person relates to the world.

      Delete
  23. Despite the importance of what morals and mentalities our parents raise us on, experience plays a greater role in teaching a person how to be practical and deal with life's issues in the proper manner and so reinforces his/her morals.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We establish what is wrong and what is right purely by social constructs. Since what is right in Lebanon could be wrong somewhere else in the world, and vice versa. Morality is an aspect of human behavior that is highly controversial. What is moral and what is immoral is all based purely on perspective and the way each person views the world.

  25. Dear Dr. Sinno,
this reflective journal will be a farewell to the first semester at university, so hope it finds you well. I want to thank you for everything you’ve done as the instructor of eng 203 which is a course that I surprizingly liked. English at school was sessions of boring conversations about how to pass the official exams, where as eng 203 was different story. However , as every course in this university , eng 203 had its pros and cons.
I personally gained a lot from this course. It gave me the freedom and opportunity to write in the way I think about topics I like; as person who is intrested in politics and the progress of the society the, essays about clientelism and power of words were the amusing journeys. The problem solution report gave us a glimpse anout how a professional study must be written where the problem part should be a deep analysis of the problem from all perspectives and the solution is something rational and has the potential to be really implemented. This course also taught me how to document any sort of writings which will be a great source of credebility for any writing coming in the future. class discussions were space for self expression and peaceful yet vigorous debates that if not changed the way of thinking of anyone it did enhance debating skills of every singe participant in these debates. Finally , the oral representation was an opportunity to face an audience with information that might be conroversial and be the leader of the debate happening afterwards.
Eng 203 can become even better, it only needs some retouche. For example a guest speaker for all eng 203 sections would have been a great addition to the course, especially if he chooses a topic that concerns the students from dealing with political issues in the university to becoming a better person. Also a real head to head or group to group debate that is monitored by the instructor would emphasize the importance of debate and the effect on the person in all aspects; it can enhance debating skills , critical thinking and even the fluency of the person. I have a comment on a few issues that happened throughout the semester. Peer review needs more time in class, online sessions were more confusing than productive , and the instructions were sometimes vague.
That’s all I have to say , thank you for everything, see you in egn 206.
